Delaware: Hazing Death Case
Estate of Deceased College Student v. Sigma Alpha Mu, et al. Representing the family of a college student who died following an evening of fraternity hazing at the University of Delaware. The 18 year old pledge died following the fraternity's "Big Brother Night" ritual, where dangerous quantities of alcohol were provided to pledges by fraternity brothers (and "families" within the fraternity) as part of a "family drink." Numerous pledges lost consciousness that night, waking only when emergency personnel arrived at the scene and tried in vain to rescue the young man. Had such care been summoned or provided earlier, he would have survived. Instead, he was simply placed on a couch with a trash can near him to catch his vomit. The case is currently in litigation, but the following are news articles regarding this case: News Article 1, News Article 2.
